It’s Fes-cinating

Our journey with Adventures by Disney continued as we left the serenity of Casablanca behind and made our way to our second stunning home base: the breathtaking Palais Faraj in the heart of Fes, Morocco. Set on a hill overlooking the ancient medina, this luxurious riad-turned-hotel was a seamless blend of opulence and authenticity—fit for sultans and adventure-seekers alike.

Before we arrived in Fes, we made an unforgettable stop at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis. Nestled among olive groves and rolling hills, Volubilis is home to the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. Once a thriving outpost of the Roman Empire, the site offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient life with its triumphal arches, grand basilicas, and stunning floor mosaics that have withstood centuries of time. Walking through the remnants of this ancient city, we could almost hear the echoes of Roman footsteps on the stone roads and imagine the bustling life that once filled these ruins.

Following our exploration of the ruins, we were warmly welcomed into Walila Farm for a true farm-to-table lunch experience. The family who owns the farm greeted us with genuine excitement and pride, eager to share not just their food, but also their deep connection to the land and its traditions. Every dish we enjoyed was lovingly prepared using ingredients grown or raised right there on the farm—fresh, flavorful, and unforgettable. During lunch, a small but surprising detail caught our eye: the family’s cash register. It was an antique NCR register, and the words :”Dayton, Ohio” were proudly displayed across its face. It felt like a little wink from the universe—this unexpected connection to home, right there in the Moroccan countryside, reminding us how small and beautifully intertwined the world can be.

From the moment we arrived back in Fes, the air buzzed with the energy of a city that has been alive for over a thousand years. Fes isn’t just a place you visit—it’s a place you feel, hear, smell, and taste. The call to prayer echoing through the narrow, winding alleys. The brilliant mosaics. The scent of spices and leather weaving their way through the souks. The first few times you hear the adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, it may feel loud or even a bit startling, especially if you're not used to it. However… it’s also a powerful reminder of the rhythm of daily life here, where taking time to pause and connect spiritually is an honored part of the culture. We know that eery step deeper into the adventure was like time-traveling through history and culture, led by expert Adventure Guides who brought stories to life in a way only Disney can.

Palais Faraj was once a noble palace, and it still radiates that regal charm in every intricate detail. Designed by the famous Moroccan architect Jean-Baptiste Barian, its architecture is a celebration of Andalusian-Moorish style—think hand-carved cedar wood, zellij tilework in bold geometric patterns, sweeping archways, and stained glass that catches the Moroccan sun just right. Each suite feels like a private sanctuary, rich with traditional decor yet equipped with modern comforts. And the rooftop terrace? It offers panoramic views of the Fes medina that are nothing short of enchanting—especially at sunset, when the city glows gold and the muezzin’s call to prayer seems to float on the breeze. After arriving at the hotel, we had an amazing dinner together, sharing laughs and excitement as we discussed our next day of adventure before retiring for the evening.

The next morning began with another delightful Moroccan breakfast before we set off to explore more of Fes. Our first stop was Borj Sud, perched above the city with a stunning view overlooking the Fes Medina and the distant Borj Nord on the opposite hillside. This incredible vantage point served as a reminder of the city's rich historical roots and strategic layout.

Next, we visited the Fes Medina, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we had the chance to see how much of this living, breathing city continues to thrive. Our first stop was the famed tannery, an experience that was both fascinating and overwhelming. The tannery has been operating for over 750 years, and its centuries-old techniques have preserved its status as a cornerstone of Fes' leather industry. However, the aromas were not exactly what you’d call pleasant—it’s a sensory experience, to say the least! That said, it was an incredible opportunity to support local businesses and see the craftsmanship firsthand.

After soaking in the breathtaking views, we made our way to a local restaurant in the Medina for a traditional Moroccan meal. One thing I quickly learned carrots and beets seem to accompany nearly every meal here, and let me tell you, I was a happy camper. The flavors were vibrant, earthy, and comforting, a delicious reflection of Moroccan culinary tradition.

Then came one of the most enjoyable hands-on activities of the trip: a group cooking class at Palais Amani. The laughs were endless as we learned the secrets behind Moroccan cuisine, guided by the most amazing chef I’ve ever met, Loubna. The vibrant energy in the kitchen made the afternoon unforgettable, and the food was absolutely delicious—another perfect cultural immersion.

The following morning, again another amazing breakfast, we headed to the Royal Palace Gate, one of the most iconic landmarks in Fes. The intricate, golden details and the grandeur of the gate make it a perfect spot for a picture to capture the city’s royal history. We walked through a neighborhood calledt Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. This area is a testament to the rich cultural diversity that has defined Fes for centuries. In the Mellah, we walked through narrow streets lined with unique architecture, visiting the Jewish Cemetery, which holds historical significance and provides a quiet reflection on the city’s once-thriving Jewish community.

Afterward, we made our way to Cafe Clock, a popular spot known for its innovative dishes and cultural vibe. Here, we had the chance to try something a bit out of the ordinary: a camel burger. Surprisingly lean and full of spice, it was a unique culinary experience that offered a taste of something completely new, yet still wonderfully delicious.

Our next adventure took us to a Ceramic Cooperative, where we had the chance to unleash our creativity. We painted pottery, crafted mosaics from hand-cut pieces, and even tried our hands at the pottery wheel—an unforgettable hands-on experience. Of course, we all spent time afterwards picking out beautiful pieces to take home, each one serving as a unique memento of our time in Fes. The evening wrapped up with dinner on our own, giving us the opportunity to savor the flavors of the city in a more personal, relaxed setting. Another wonderful day exploring the history, culture, and flavors of Fes!

Up next, we say goodbye (Ma’a as-salama) as we make our way towards Erg Chebbi... Already Day 5 of our trip, but the beginning of a long travel day and the most important day of my life up to this point… The Sahara.
